Overview: Grolier Online is an encyclopedia. Tweens will have access to 120, 000 articles, 340, 000 Web links, and 1, 100 world newspapers. Schools/libraries can subscribe to eight individual encyclopedias that will fit their student’s needs. There are three choices: general reference, two science-specific, two social studies-focused, and a Spanish-language encyclopedia. The design is simple, and the main page has two major functions: users can visit individual encyclopedias to which they are subscribed, or search them all. The home page is similar for all of the age groups. Navigate from elementary to middle school to high school with little changes. The interface design is more for middle school kids and high school kids. From the main page, students will conduct a search or select a specific encyclopedia from the menu.
Review: The online encyclopedias like World Book and Britannica are prestigious, and hard to compete with , but Grolier Online is hitting the market, making the search more direct and effective search methods. I was able to search via demo version, and the quality of related websites that the database found were excellent. The list is sorted alphabetically, and students can find online news from any country, from multiple sources.
