Genre/Subject: Manga, Fantasy
Ages: 12 and up
Plot: Runa Rindo is an orphan who lives in an orphanage and has made friends with other orphans: Sae, Mana-chan and Mit-chan. Runa is a goodhearted girl, who can be clumsy at times. She does not recognize that she has superpowers, even though when she was younger she had a teacher Ms. Towako, who told her she had hidden powers. Ms. Towako did not tel Runa exactly what her powers were, but told her to always be kind to others, even when others may not be kind to her. Runa's clumsiness leaves her vulnerable to bullying, and her best frien Sae is extra-mean to Runa because she allows herself to be bullied. From the fantasy world, a boy-girl couple named Mokke and Suneri arrive to find out if Runa is the Princess. Runa is the true princess and she always wears a pendant around her neck. When the couple approach her forcefully, she flees and at the same time loses her pendant. Sae helps Runa look for the pendant on a vacant lot at night. They discover a magical raccoon-demon with slashing blades for claws that is ready to do harm to them. That is, until, Mokke and Suneri rescue Runa. Sae somehow disappears. Runa still refuses to believe she is a princess, until she unknowingly uses her supersede to save her little friend Mit-chan from being killed by a speeding truck. Runa eventually realizes the truth, and Mokke and Suneri explain that she is the daughter of a fairy princess who fell in love with a human and abandoned her daughter only to save her life. There was an earthquake that has released Runa's magical thire eye, but also opened a portal between the human and fairy worlds, allowing evil fairies into the human world. Mokke and Suneri help train Runa how to manage her powers, and this ends the first volume.
Review:
There is a satirical element with her best friend being mean to the main character. There is also the male-female duo team, that is frequent in manga movies/books. This fantasy genre takes Runa, an orphan, and transforms her into a magical being. This structure is similar to Harry Potter books, Eragon book, and uses the format of manga to represent the story. The story could be identified as a mystery because the character does not know about their parents, where she came from, and the characters help her discover the truth behind her own family history. The characters show a great deal of emotion in their facial expressions and body positions. A great story for first time graphic novel readers.
